But I remember people talking about this, like why is the car on fire?Because its awesome. It is. Dangerous, awesome.Hello my friendsand welcome back to PlayStation Underground. On todays show, a very special guest and game,we have Far Cry 5,and I am joined by the games creative director, Hello, sir, and welcome back to the program.Thank you very much for having me here. Its great.Thank you so much for traveling all this way forlittle old us.Well, the weather is a little better here than it is inMontreal so Im happy to be here.So Im already upset to see that these cows were victimsof an exchange that were going to have between our hero andsome opponents. But tell me a little bit aboutwhere we are in the game right now.Youre showing a larger take on a whole region of
Hope County, correct?Yeah. So I think people who are kind of looking at this again afterseeing it at E3 or Gamescomare sort of wondering how big is the region. And we really want to showcase just how lush it is.So youre just sort of outside the area that is known asFalls End, this little town, and we got you sort of being able to bum around and do stuff. And obviously the cult is out there and you got to be careful, but we wanted to be able to surround the world with tons ofstuff that you would normally see, cars, vehicles you can pick up.If you want to get into a classic American muscle car,you can.But the worlds dangerous.Youre going to have to look around for people that you cankind of bring into your group, into your squad,to push back on the cult because we built this rich, organic world that really does push back based off of what youdo like right there.Awesome.Unfortunate.This is super good. See,This is the kind of stuff as a dev where were like we hope wehave the collision of systems, and when stuff like thathappens, you cant help but laugh. Its fantastic. And I will point out that it may be a viewers first timeseeing Far Cry 5, which is coming to PS4 on March 27th bythe way, this is youre essentially,I kind of want to say a resistance fighter.Youre battling a cult thats taken a grip on a small town.Well, A big town, a big lush town.A huge space in Montana. But, anyway, continue. Are we going to see another exchange coming up here? This is the kind of thing we want to do.We know that the cult is out there, and we know that youre going to start building this resistance. And the way to do that is theres going to be hostagesthat you can liberate, take some of these civilians and bringthem out, go toe-to-toe with the cult, and when you do youre able to get intel from them becausetypically people who play Far Cry in the past have seen ussort of, you know, you climb towers, and thats how you inform your play throughout the world. And this time we wanted you to feel like regular people. You meet people, you see them, you see whats going on,and you get an opportunity to --See. Theres one right there picking up a weapon. Far Cry 5 PC Download Its, you know, some people are going to help you;some people are going to be scared. But theres a real interesting thing that happens with thesocial contract between people in the real world where you goup and talk to somebody and then they give you information. And they may not have all the information. And if we build our world to feel like that,it just feels real. Now, I dont know if this is too under the hood, but I just saw Susies name came up as you spoke with her. Now, is she a set, like a written NPC?Is this just a random NPC that could have happened to be therein that moment? How does that work?Yeah. So we wanted to blur the linesbetween sort of the random and the set.So we said everybodys got a purpose;everybodys got a little bit of a history. So even though Susie may not be somebody that is a large playerin the story, shes still somebody with a personality. She has opinions.Oh jeez. Here we go.Oh my goodness. Just drive right by it though. You know what?Theres going to be times where Im going to just stop talking. You know, we wanted to make it so that theres variety.Theres an opportunity to have regular people who maybe arentgoing to pick up a weapon and help you.But then at that point, youre able to turn to Susie and say, hey, listen. You want to join? Do you want to fight with me?And you can.Shes in the car. Shes going to come with.Shes going to have opinions about stuff, and youre justgoing to go out there and have a great time together.I dont know if youre allowed to say,but is Susie going to then permanently join the roster oris she at the whims of fate and she could potentially be downedin combat? The whims of fate? I like the way that sounds.I wanted to avoid something really dangerous.No. Thats really good. That might be my next band name or something. The whims of fate? Do it. Youre welcome to take it.Thats awesome.I think what we wanted to do was make it so that we hadcharacters like that and if eventually they do die, theyre gone. But you do have the opportunity to bring them back. You do have the opportunity to do that.Okay.More animals on the side of road.More animals.A lot of wildlife already weve seen.Weve seen like three sets of wildlife. Its lush, right? We want to make it so when we were in Montana,we actually saw all this stuff here.It was really cool to see all this stuff, just how alive the world is.So we wanted to have that experiencefor the player as well.Whoa. That was a narrow miss. Also you could have accidentally started hunting inthat moment because the deer just sprinted by.That was an awesome shot on that guy,but the deer was very, very close.Lucky or unlucky deer, Im not sure where that deer falls. So it seems like weve rescued another civilian. So far were just a good old fashioned hero.Yeah.So I think its cool because you got the opportunity to go talkto somebody, and I think shes got a side mission right nowthat you could do.Or you can see off in the distance theres actually asymbol for an outpost. So you could go take the outpost. But theres just all these little moments in the world thatare alive, that are organic. And to be honest, when we design it, its kind of interesting forus because, because theyre organic,we dont know whats going to propagate. And so its entirely up to the player how they want to play it.Maybe you met Susie; maybe you havent.Maybe you got a different Guns for Hire;maybe you got a premier Guns for Hire.Maybe you got a Fangs for Hire; maybe you got Boomer with you.So its really interesting for us to sit backand watch it live.Is it really called Fangs for Hire because of the dog?Yes.Yes. Who came up with that one?I dont remember.I dont remember, but Im taking full credit.Take full credit for everything. You designed the game yourself. There you go.Shoot.I was going to ask something about the wildlife again. But does the wildlife and just in general this other tapestryof Hope County, does that play into side activities,I mean hunting?I dont know if theres fishing. There is.Usually games like this have fishing.Yes. Theres a lot of fishing.Dont disappoint me.So thats the thing that we saw at E3.We build this really earnest game, this opportunity for you to go in there and be the hero, and people just go fishing and decide theyre just going to dothat for two hours. And its like, okay, you know what?Play the game the way you want to play it.Sir, you need to get off the demo.So this is a good example. Heres an outpost. If you played Far Cry 3 or Far Cry 4,you know this, and in Primal you know this very well, the situation that youre in,but we made it so its very much alive. And then whats really nice about this is that youre goingto be able to go in and have the place,so theres opportunities.Whenever we build an outpost or we build elements of the game,we really think about freedom, opportunity, and surprise. The freedom to be able to attack this outpost the way you want. All kinds of opportunities, different guns, differentweapons, different ways of aggressing the situation. And then the surprise may not always go the way you think, and youll see as it happens. That is literally every time I try and play somethingstealthy or strategically. It always goes to hell immediately.I understand.Youre doing pretty well here so far.Nice shot.Oh, is this a silenced weapon?Yes. So they dont know.Yes.Little do they know that they are under attack.Correct.I remember what I was going to ask you, does our protagonist have a name, identity,or is it a nameless protagonist? What weve been trying to do is moving towards somethingthats really lean. What I dont like is when Im playing a game and the gamedoesnt communicate what my emotions areor what my feelings are.So in this case weve got -- Im just watching it happen. What weve got is a player character thats super lean.So you have an occupation. But from the standpoint of who you are is who you pick.Right. Absolutely. Now things escalating quickly, tensions rising.I dont know if in this footage were going to see ourprotagonist downed at any point. Well find out.You may.I love -- see, this must be really fun for leveldesigners, having these little pockets of indoor space mixed inwith the huge sprawling outdoors because that creates littleinteresting points of cover and wrinkle to that combat. The thing thats interesting is that as yourebuilding this stuff, you know, a lot of designers, youre looking at the distance to the road.Thats the challenge of building something that people know.I think one of the challenges of coming to the States is thatpeople understand how long a driveway should be,what feels right.Okay. True. Yeah.As opposed to other Far Crys which featured more, lets say, exotic locations for an American audience. But here, this is very familiar to people. Here A door should be a certain size;the steps should be -- even branding.Like, the world is just filled with branding.I, like, looked away for a moment, and the outpost was liberated. In a blink of an eye.So then basically what youve got here is now thatyoure legend is starting to grow and the people in theregion are starting to understand that youre pushingback on the cult, theyre going to start to join you.And this is where you really see the resistance meterand the resistance start. This is no longer a cult outpost; this is yours. And you got people that can give you quests;you got side missions; you got main missions;you got story opportunities. You actually see the resistance meter go up.And whats happening there which is really interesting for us isif were going to build this live game, this feeling that its alive and the idea that these heralds andthe cult have a mandate and that what youre doing is youre thefly in the ointment, your getting in the way of it.So you can actually see youre progression in the world. But you can also get the sense of theyre going to push back. Are there any other gameplay wrinkles that come frombuilding up that resistance meter? Is that considered like your global experienceor is that character-based? How does that work? Its more just getting a sense of whether or not thepeople are going to join you.So youre really getting an understanding of when John orFaith or Jacob or the father are going to push back on you. This is a guy named Merle.Hes a pretty interesting character.I love this guy.Oh no. Merles under attack. So thats super interesting for us is that youre in themiddle of a story moment and then what happens is that thecult shows up and the story moment will stop, and theyll act like regular people.Youll see stuff going on where Merle is going to run.Hes going to head for cover.Hes going to take a minute. In this case hes going to protect himself. And then when he feels like everything is done and over, hell continue the conversation.Nice.Im thinking about all the programming nightmare that thatentails. Its not easy. No, its definitely not.We got a lot of smart people back in Toronto and inMontreal and around the world who really worked incrediblyhard to be able to do this and bring these characters to life. And its the devil is in the details. If you walk up to somebody and you go,hey, listen. Far Cry 5 PC Installer I want to have a conversation with you and thenyou decide to walk away, theyre going to get a little pissed off.Theyre going to get a little hurt. And when you come back, they may give you a little grief about it.You can hurt feelings in this game?Watch out because thats the truest weaponis the mind and the heart.Words hurt.So I dont know if you know where were driving next.It looks like we have a waypoint in the distance. So whats happening here is that Merles got this prettycool car.And on the back of it is this 50 Cal.Hes saying if were going to do some damage against the cult, lets go get this thing. So its called the Death Wish.So youre going to go backand basically try and find this thing.Okay. Gotcha. It sounds, you know, a very peaceful vehicle, the Death Wish. They named it -- hit the nail on the head with that one.Happy birthday. Its the Death Wish.So here it is.And is it under cult control right now?It is, and its interesting because Merle says its guzzlesgas like he drinks beer, and thats why its actually at thegas station, so he knew that theyd eventually have to go andhead to the gas station.Small micro storytelling right there.Dan, you got it all figured out.So what the -- what were basically going to see here isthe attack on this to get it back. And whats really tricky about this is in maybe previousversions you go in and try and basically blow this thing up,but now you have to take it back to them and you got to be ableto use it as a weapon. So its the kind of thing where we really wanted to make roughtools and put you in situations where you could use the weaponsthat are around and kind of harvest it if you can.Oh goodness. All right. So now the chase begins.I love how about to go in the truck and wait.Wait a minute. That is a badass car. Im taking that. This is one of the things we really wanted from the game wasjust being able to get into those classic carsand then just go --you know, great, great movies of old, fantastic car chases, and get the spirit of that. And you got the radio going. But youre being chased so you have to be careful.I will point out,I think this footage is from single player --Correct.-- but I think the game does feature multiplayer.Absolutely, through the entirety of the game.Through the entirety of the game.Yep.What we want to do is just build this for-hire systemso it all felt like it was under one umbrella. So you have Guns for Hire, Fangs for Hire, and then a Friend for Hire.Good old Friend for Hire. Yep.Just going completely off-road bonkers.Oh gosh. They got back up, basically calling for help.Tell me -- I dont know if you want to talk a little bitabout the weapons system here, but I dont know how expansivecustomization is or if its very straightforwardlike you grab a weapon and you go.How do you guys approach it?I think the way it starts is just being able to pick upweapons and being able to grab things that are around you.And then start to, as you get an appreciation for what is yourplaystyle, to be able to go into shops and find weapons or buyweapons and then customize them the way you want and sort of getthat classic feel to them.So definitely for sure if you love doing thatin previous Far Crys, youre going to love it in this one.I always spend an inordinate amount of timecustomizing my arsenal, and then I feel like I just end upswitching to something else minutes later. But its part of the fun. Its all part of the fun.Oh goodness. Hello.Well, thats just it, traffic.Theres going to be people on the road. You got to be careful.Whats your favorite weapon that you usually play with?Whats the style that you play?I feel like revolvers are usually something --in other shooters I often lean towards thatbecause theyre good for a variety of situations. They feel cool.Sometimes you get those cool engravings on the side.See, for me its the flamethrower, but I dont know if that would help here. That would only cause mayhem.Probably not.I think that really tells us about our personalities is thatyou lean into the flamethrower.Whats cool about this is that youre actually seeing lifeon the side where the cult is going in and taking people. Its in the middle of a mission, but still the world is open. And so we really dont know whats going to happen.Okay.So they threw out smoke, and now youre in a bit of trouble.Theres also a convoy coming bybecause theyre actually doing stuff. Most flagrant use of dynamite Ive ever seen. All right. So heres the options: You got to go get that truck.See if you can. Leave that muscle car.Good-bye sweet muscle car. We hardly new yee. Here you go. You get to turn it into a weapon. There he is.Now, I think that that soldier probably should have turned tailat that that point.Yeah.Strategy dictated.Maybe the courage was too great for him.So now you got to head back towards Merle. You got the truck. And now when you eventually get back there,Merle hops on the back. He hops on the 50 Cal.And now what youre going to do is youre going to basically goaround here to this place where theyre stashing this thingcalled the Bliss. And thats one of the things that the cult usesto control people. So theres all these barrels of Bliss, and you basically destroy them and blow them up.And if youre successful, you get to keep the Death Wish. But only if youre successful.Only if youre successful. And you can hear it actually. You here that reverb?Thats the actual drug taking its effect on the playeras you play.Oh. Interesting. Okay.Oh no. Fire inside the vehicle, never a good sign. Please exit as soon as possible for your safety. So now Merles in the 50 Cal,and hes actually unleashing on these guysat the same time as you.I like that youre still getting the stealth markers.Theyre like, are you trying to?No? Okay. No, no.Okay.What about how do you guys manage the day/night cyclein Far Cry 5?Is it dynamic? Is it something thats a set?Does it depend on story missions?Theres definitely moments in the game where we wanted youto be able to experience a certain time of day,but for the most part, its pretty organic. It manages the way you expect it to.So you just completed the Death Wish and now you can go andrepair if you want, or you could go talk to Merle,or can even go in and buy a new vehicle.Entirely up to you.You can just drive that one straight off a cliff.Who needs the Death Wish. But once you find it, its yours because thats what youwanted, right? Were headed to something a little bit more interesting. This is a little --This wasnt interesting already? The last one was interesting, but I think youll see what I mean. This is Clutch Nixon, the greatest stuntman ever to comeout of Hope Valley.Oh my goodness. So its -- I just want to hear it.So, now, what we really wanted was,you know when you go to a place and you sit at the bar and youhear about these stories? The local legends. The local legends. We really wanted one, so we built one.And you get to play the memories of his greatest achievements asa stuntman. And theyre just awesome.Theyre just out of control.Theyre just ridiculously amazing. The cars on fire.So youre actually in the past right now?Correct.Youre living sort of the best of his adventures and seeing ifyou can really beat his -- and you can actually hear thesportscaster talking about your feats and how youre doing.Dan, are you saying that I can change the past by relivingthe life of Clutch Nixon?I dont know if you could do that.Arent we righting the past in this moment? You might be; you might be.I remember people talking about this: Why is the car on fire?Because its awesome. It is. Dangerous, awesome, on fire still.NARRATOR: That car must feel like an oven.Correct.I love the music. Its got to have a little bit of rock in there.Yep.You guys always have fun with music in these games. We do. We really do.I think we spoke about that before.Especially with this game, youre tapping into a completelydifferent music tapestrycompared to the other Far Cry games. And I think the thing too is that we really tried to makeeach region different. So as you traverse through the world -- there you go.Jump, yeah. Into the water. He survives that, right? He survives everything; hes Clutch Nixon.Well, showed me.So the music is just such a big part. Its part of what brings the charm. Its that huge component of emotion and whether or not youfeel that in the game. And we just put these sort of in the world so that you canexperience it.And thats the thing about the game is that we built this game.We definitely have a story that has earnest moments is it.We definitely have moments of huge pushback on the cult. But we also recognize that just because were thinking that thegame is played a certain way, is not the way people will play it.And what we want to be able to do is build a world thatsorganic and allows the player to go in every direction, get any vehicle they want, be able to basically play the gameand author the experience the way they want, and then go off.Its not predictive. We want them to just go and play.I think thats one of the most fascinating things aboutopen-world design to me as someone from the outside --something is afoot.Basically you have to go into the mapand youre able to go over a couple of key locationswhere people are in trouble. And theyre basically calling you over the radio. And so I think this heads towards Boomer. You think. Were not sure.Pretty sure.To be confirmed shortly.Yes.Points.I wish that todays GPS could provide that level of precision.Yeah.Youre driving a car thats rear-wheel drive, racing slicks on it, but you got this amazing GPS.But its important that if we build a world where if theplayer really wants to go do something,we give them the opportunity to know where to go and what to do.You could easily get lost in a big open world like this.Oh goodness. Hello. Here they come.Theyre really not following the rules of the roadare they? No, theyre not.Just missed.Oh my god. Look at that swerve. They just called for backup,so theres more of them coming.Oh, this is great.See, moments like this which feel like an action movie buttheyre actually being created by the player in the moment, unbelievable. That really always blows my mind.I think we had a real moment on Far Cry 4 when we wereworking on one mission in particular with Pagan Min wherePagan started to do things on his own,and we made it an opportunity for Pagan to make choices in themission. And we were thinking to ourselves, why dont we just allow the game to do that across the entiretyof the game.So right here, the cult pushes back.Maybe an animal is going to show up.You got a helicopter thats going to attack you.Meanwhile, youre headed towards a mission. You may even be mid-mission, but this kind of stuff happens, and we dont know that its going to happen. And then we get to see it firsthand.Dan, I have a great subtitle for Far Cry 5 Id liketo pitch to you now.I know the game titles already been decided.Lets hear it.Far Cry 5: Multitasking.(Laughter) Got it.I think its going to sell.Well get the dot com address later.Yeah. Just work out the details with my lawyer.Cool.I love that you can see in the distance. You got these amazing mountains.I love the diversity of the environment as well.Well, you asked the question about night and day, and, honestly, theres some really cool things about beingalone in the dark and feeling the sense of whats around thecorner and then these beautiful moments of dawn or dusk. And the lighting in Montana was phenomenal when we were there,so we just wanted to be able to experience. But then theres also terrible stuff going on --Chilling.-- where the cults done terrible stuff because they arebad people and basically come in,and then you have an opportunity to push back on them. That thing off in the distance, I believe that thats actually arepurposed fertilizer container and inside it is Bliss. And if you blow it up, you actually get resistance points.Okay.But we do have apple and pumpkin picking right there. And theres Boomer.Awe. I see the sign.Yep. So lets see what we do here.Do we go in quiet? And you can hear Boomer.Boomer, Im coming! So what the cult is doing here is theyre going in andtaking animals. And theyre taking animals and turning them into something thatIm not supposed to talk about, but Im going to anyway.Theyre called Judges, and theyre pretty badass. So youre going to go save Boomer from that happening tohim and then be able to have your first Fangs for Hire.Excellent. Also that sounds very scary.Im glad were rescuing Boomer.Rescue all the animals and pumpkins. This would be so pleasant and peaceful if there wasnt --if you werent in battle and combat.Yes, were it not for the cult. But the thing for us is that we wanted to -- when yourebuilding a game that is this big and a world thats this rich,we want to be able to have a variety of stories and a varietyof tones in it.Sure, youre going to have moments that are earnest likethis where youre saving the dog and basically bringing this intoyour group, but then youre also going to have moments like withClutch Nixon. And so we just want to be able to make it so there are littleaction bubbles in stories that you can snack on.I love snackable stories.Sure.Low on calories; high on flavor.Thats pretty good stuff.Yeah. I came up with it just now.Nice.Okay. That helicopter is menacing.Just be careful. Here we go.And I love the lighting that were playing with here. Were kind of pulling up on stealth.Yeah. The team did a fantastic job.Leave him alone. Oh my goodness. Here we go. Its on.Okay. Knife kill.Oh jeez. Brutal. Now, they called for backup is what they do.So basically -- all right. So you got him.And now Boomer is out, and he can hold is own.Go Boomer!Does boomer come with, like, a jet pack or a rocket launcherstrapped to his back? No.Boomer is awesome just the way he is. Hes super good.So they did call for backup. So Boomer is available now as a Fangs for Hire, but you have to go enlist him.Okay.Hes going to do some damage. He can hold his own.Support your local. So now.Pet, the most important subcommand. Those are Boomers former owners.Oh no.Hes pretty upset about it, right? So theres a story to be told here.We really just tried to put little stories in that you couldjust take a minute and drink that in.And now you can go up and basically pet him,and hes yours.Definitely a somber moment in a game that has a highemotional range.Ladies and gentlemen, that was Far Cry 5which is coming to PS4 March 27th.Dan, such a pleasure to have you as always.Thank you for your commentary.Thank you so much. It was great. Awesome.Final thoughts for the audience.I just hope they love it.We really are trying to build something and had builtsomething where the players get to tell their stories, and we cant wait to hear them.Great. Thank you, Thank you.
